Focus On What Really Matters

by RTOL on 2011/12/28

Staying in touch with what really matters to you will put the power of purpose into everything you do. If you’re facing a difficult or unpleasant task without a clear understanding of why it needs to be done, you’re likely to jump on the first excuse not to do it. Or, you’ll procrastinate and end up making it even more difficult. Or, you’ll do it begrudgingly and end up having to fix a lot of mistakes. Think of a time when you’ve been given a task that you thought was completely unnecessary. Was your heart in the effort? Of course not.

But when you are clear about why it needs to be done, even if it is unpleasant, you’ll be much more successful at making it happen, as quickly and effectively as possible.

When you try to ignore or avoid what really matters, it drains energy from you, slowly but surely. Each time you work late instead of spending the time with your family, it drains you. Each time you compromise your values in order to go along with business as usual, it drains you. Each time you put off your vision of what life could be in the interest of the comfort or convenience of the moment, it drains your energy away.

By the same token, when you give your life and focus to what really matters, it positively energizes your life. You’ve surely been around people who seem to have an endless supply of positive, vital energy, who seem to be able to accomplish all sorts of great things with ease. When you see someone like that, someone who is positive and purposeful and filled with so much energy that you’re literally drawn toward them, it’s almost certain that he or she is intimately in touch with what really matters.

There are things in your life that really matter to you, things that will drive you positively and energetically forward each day. Get a clear understanding of what they are. Give your focus and attention to them. Your life is precious and unique and filled with possibilities. Give it all the value it deserves. Live with richness and fulfillment each day by being true to what really matters.
