Make Your Persistence Count

Give Yourself Time

It may sound obvious, but persistence, by very definition, takes time. In the modern day world we have become accustomed to instant this and instant that, and it certainly pays to have a sense of urgency. Still, the valuable, important things take time to develop — time and persistence.

The value of persistence cannot be realized overnight. Yes, you can cultivate your persistence by practicing it on the little, short-term things. Real, life-changing persistence, though, will take some time.

Time will come to you, every moment, every day, every year. It just keeps on coming. You don’t have to worry about that. Your job is to make the most of that time through the persistence of your efforts. The time will come anyway, no matter what you do. You have the choice to either make it count or to fritter it away. Persistent effort is what will really make it count. Persistence requires time, and time can strengthen your persistence if you so choose.

Make Your Persistence Count

The power of persistence demands good judgment. Blind persistence will not get you very far. There’s a big difference between being persistent and being stubborn. If a course of action is clearly not working, then by all means consider changing course. Even when you do, continue to persist, and make sure your efforts are effective.

Changing your approach is not the same as giving up. Remember that there’s a very big difference between the object of your persistence and the challenges imposed by that persistence.

By all means, adjust your strategy as you go along. And by all means, keep your eye on the prize, keep your efforts focused on the final goal.

Every ship that sails across the ocean, every plane that flies through the sky, makes numerous course corrections in order to reach a particular destination. Persistence means making course corrections without changing the destination.

Keep Going

If you stop when you’re halfway there, or even three quarters of the way there, or even nine-tenths of the way there, you’ll never reach your destination.

It is exciting to get started, and it is a thrill to arrive. The thing that makes it all happen is persistence. There is no substitute for it. When everything is working in your favor, keep going, for it would indeed be foolish to stop. When things are working against you, keep going, and your determination will turn the tide.

The point is, keep going. There are no rewards for half of an accomplishment. You get no commission when you make three quarters of a sale. You can only win the race when you run it through to the end. All the great ideas, and talent and genius in the world, cannot help you unless you persist.

Know where you’re going, and keep on going until you’ve made it all the way there.
